Charlene wasn’t embarrassed to talk about this on a city street. She is trying to promote female condoms to prevent HIV epidemic in Washington DC. Washington has the highest infection rate among all the states of U.S.A.
Community groups are dealing out 500,000 female condoms during training sessions at barber shops, restaurants, beauty salons and churches as well. Though the female condoms are generally wider than the male condoms, the length is same for all.
CVS is selling this sort of condom through their District of Columbia drugstores. Washington is the only place where people can collect them from a community group or outside of a health clinic. On the other hand, city officials have taken an initiative to advertise it through a website and posters on the buses as well.
According to the report of the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Washington is in the high risk of severe HIV outbreak. Three percent of the population over the age of 12 has already been infected by HIV.
After the publication of this study, the city’s health department initiated a massive plan to promote female condoms to the people. The MAC AIDS fund provided assistance for this by grating $500,000 to make it successful.
Though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration granted female condom in 1993, it has never been so available all through the U.S. It’s just an attempt only, still there are many things to be done to prevent HIV epidemic.
