If there’s one silver lining to the cloud cast over Mac users by the recent revelation that the Flashfake Trojan has infected over 500,000 Macs worldwide, it’s surely the end to the myth that Macs are invulnerable to viruses and other malware. Seasoned Mac users will have never claimed anything different, but now there’s no excuse for any Mac users to run without protection of some form or other.

Of course, before you can bolt the barn door, you need to make sure no horses have escaped, which is where Kaspersky’s free Flashfake Removal Tool comes in. As the name implies, it’s designed to remove any specific Flashfake infection from your Mac – it’ll quickly scan for infection, inform you of the result and then take steps – if necessary – to nullify the infection.

The whole Flashfake furore came about because of a vulnerability in the Java programming language, which was exploited by hackers to great effect after OS X was left unprotected for over a month after the original hole had been patched by Oracle, Java’s developer. That’s because Apple relies on its own update mechanism, which wasn’t acted on until recently.

Once you’ve verified – or cleaned – your Mac, you need to make sure the patch is closed: fire up System Update and you’ll see the Java for OS X 2012-02 v1.0 patch waiting for you. Once installed, you should be safe from Flashfake.

Whether or not the Flashfake Removal Tool detected an infection or not, now is the time to add anti-virus protection to your Mac if none is currently installed. You don’t have to pay a penny either, with both Sophos Anti-Virus for Mac Home Edition and Avira Free Mac Security 1.0 providing protection against malware for free.

Kaspersky Flashfake Removal Tool is a freeware download for Mac users running OS X. Take our advice and run it as the first step towards keeping your Mac free from nasties.

As we stated earlier, Adapter is also available for Windows users, although its development seems to have stalled (the current version is 1.0.30). Facebook, the biggest social- networking service, is buying the Instagram mobile photo-sharing application for about $1 billion in cash and stock, using its biggest acquisition yet to attract users of mobile devices.

The transaction is expected to close later this quarter, Menlo Park, Calif.-based Facebook said today in a statement on its site. Facebook Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg also announced the deal on his Facebook profile page.

Instagram, owned by San Francisco-based Burbn, boasts more than 30 million users and the most popular free photo- sharing application on Apple’s App Store. The deal may help Facebook win handset users and advertisers who target them, said Rebecca Lieb, an analyst at Altimeter Group LLC.

It marks the first time Facebook has acquired a product and company with so many users, Zuckerberg said in his posting. Facebook, which intends to raise $5 billion in the biggest initial public offering of an Internet company, says it plans to let Instagram remain independent.

If you’ve installed the Consumer Preview of Windows 8, you can’t have failed to notice that there appears to be a glaring omission. The absence of a familiar Start button is something that has fazed many users who have taken the plunge and decided to test drive the preview edition of Microsoft’s next operating system. Start8 is a remarkably simple, yet nonetheless remarkable, free tool that can be used to restore the Start menu.

The app does not go as far as restoring the original Start menu, but the presence of a standard Start button means that accessing the applications you have installed is made significantly easier. Many people who have installed Windows 8 have been confused by the empty space that appears to the far left of the taskbar, and Start8 beautifully fills this gap and improves the ease of use of Windows 8. You have a choice of Start buttons to boot.

Mozilla has released the latest version of the Firefox Add-on SDK. For those unfamiliar with the Add-on SDK, it is a toolkit designed to make it easy to create Firefox add-ons using web development languages and tools, and features a simplified API.
A marketplace with apps  for a variety of platforms. That’s the vision of a new Mozilla Marketplace, announced Thursday by the non-profit maker of the Firefox browser.
The apps available in the new Marketplace will not be platform-specific, as those in Apple’s iTunes App Store or Google’s Android  Market are. Rather, it will feature apps that use open Web technologies, such as HTML5, JavaScript, CSS and Mozilla-proposed Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for rich media apps. The organization said that users will be able to purchase an app once, and then use it on any HTML5-enabled device, across operating systems.

‘Biggest Playing Field Imaginable’

“We are enabling the Web to be the marketplace, giving developers the opportunity to play on the biggest playing field imaginable,” said Mozilla Chief of Innovation Todd Simpson, in a statement. In Mozilla’s approach, the Web itself becomes the platform.

The “write once, deploy  everywhere” vision has been tried more than once before, such as with Java-coded client applications and Web-based hosted applications. Mozilla said that its approach will provide open and flexible billing options, and that the use of Web standards will “massively reduce the cost of creating, versioning and maintaining applications.”

Both Apple and Google have been backers of HTML5 technologies, but have so far avoided creating a venue for apps to run on others’ platforms.

The Marketplace is one component of the new Mozilla Web App platform. It will be open for developers’ submissions at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona next week, and will be accessible to consumers and businesses later this year. Categories will include games, media, music, productivity and other areas.

The other two major components are proposed APIs, and a new identity system. The APIs will be submitted to the W3C standards body for approval, and the identity system is intended to tie apps to users, not to devices or platforms.

1. Update the BIOS

Upgrading your PC’s BIOS, or firmware in other devices like the router, could be a quick way to improve performance, fix bugs and even add new features. Look for the current BIOS version number on your boot screen or in the BIOS set-up program and then visit the manufacturer’s site to check for recent upgrades.
2. Disable unwanted devices

Speed up the boot process by turning off motherboard devices that you’re not using, such as integrated sound, graphics, extra network ports and so on. Look for a BIOS set-up menu called something like Integrated Peripherals to find the options that you need.

Once Windows starts, launch Device Manager (devmgmt.msc), locate any remaining unwanted devices, right-click them and select ‘Disable’ to save more resources. Be careful, though – disable the wrong device and you’re likely to find that your PC won’t be able to reboot. If you’re in any doubt about what a service does, look it up on the internet or leave it well alone.
3. Kick-start your PC

Optimising your BIOS settings will make for a quicker boot. Turn off the extended memory test, since it’s useless, then turn on a QuickBoot or FastBoot mode (the names may vary) for a little extra speed.

Next, browse your BIOS set-up program looking for the boot order settings (often found under a Boot or Startup | Boot menu), which is a list that determines where your system looks for bootable devices.

Make sure that your hard drive comes right at the top of the list to avoid your system wasting time checking other devices. If you need to boot from CD later on (typically to install a new operating system or run a Live CD), you can temporarily change it back.
4. Get rid of USB checks

If you leave a USB drive connected to your PC and it appears in the boot order before your hard drive, then your PC will give the drive some time to initialise before checking whether it’s bootable. In some BIOSes this time is called the USB Mass Storage Delay, and it can be determined by you.

If you never boot from a USB drive then set this to the lowest available figure to minimise any delay. If you find that you need to boot from a USB device in the future, simply increase the figure again.
5. Overclock the CPU

Overclocking your CPU – or running it faster than its rated speed – can get you 10 to 20 per cent more performance for a few minutes’ work. There are risks, though. More speed means more heat and maybe more voltage too.

You’ll use more power, and components will have a greater chance of failing – so don’t try this unless you’re willing to accept the risks of doing so. Assuming you are, launch your BIOS set-up program and look for the overclocking settings (try the Advanced menu). Exactly what’s available depends on your hardware, but in principle increase your CPU and memory frequencies just a little.

Boot your system and stress-test it with tools such as memtest86+ and OCCT to confirm that all is well. If it is, increase the frequencies a little more, and see what happens; if not, reduce the frequencies or increase the voltages (VCore, memory voltage), which should allow you to run a little faster (although doing this also risks burning out your components).

Don’t do anything until you know what’s appropriate for your hardware, though. The Extreme Overclocking forum is a great place to find out more.
